Home Shallow Draft Charters Page 13
These yachts draw less than six feet of water, which opens up cruising grounds that deeper vessels simply can’t reach. In the Bahamas, that means tucking into the turquoise shallows of the Exuma Banks or anchoring steps from secluded sandbars. In the Caribbean, you can slip inside reef passes to protected anchorages or pull right up to beaches where guests can walk directly from the swim platform onto the sand.
The practical advantage is access. While deeper-draft yachts anchor farther offshore, shallow-draft vessels get you closer to what you came to see—whether that’s a quiet cove, a beachfront restaurant only reachable by boat, or prime snorkeling spots in knee-deep water. This is particularly valuable in the Bahamas, where much of the most beautiful cruising happens in water too shallow for traditional motor yachts.
You’ll find these yachts especially useful if your itinerary includes the Exumas, the Abacos, or anywhere the seabed sits close to the surface. They handle open water perfectly well but give you flexibility when you want to explore skinny water or anchor in spots where you’ll have the view entirely to yourselves.
