About Broward Yachts
A Proud American Shipbuilding Heritage
Broward Marine was founded by Frank Denison in 1948 after he acquired Dooley’s Dry Dock in Fort Lauderdale. Originally building vessels for the military, Broward later became a top U.S. builder of custom yachts. The company launched over 300 yachts ranging from 60 to 165 feet, establishing a firm place in yachting history.
From Wood to Aluminum Excellence
Broward began with laminated wooden yachts but shifted to aluminum builds by the mid-1970s. The shipyard became known for its semi-custom layouts, spacious interiors, and seaworthy designs. Many Broward yachts featured custom “country kitchen” galleys and innovative layouts that continue to influence motor yacht design today.
Signature Builds and Notable Designs
Memorable Broward models include the triple-engine BRITANNIA, 156-foot BUBBA TOO, and the 92-foot JERVET, the first yacht with triple diesel engines. Celebrity and business mogul clients helped fuel Broward’s reputation as one of America’s premier builders during its peak in the 1980s and ’90s.
Design Firsts and a Lasting Footprint
Broward helped launch the concept of yacht interior design as a specialty, with Gertrude Denison co-founding Yacht Interiors. The shipyard also led performance innovations such as turbine power and high-speed aluminum hulls. Today, Broward Shipyard in Dania Beach continues to operate as a service and refit facility.
