Momentum You Can Measure: 37 Yachts Sold in 4 Months
37 yachts sold. Four months. Nearly $200M in asking price. A clear signal that the market is moving… and Worth Avenue Yachts is leading from the front.
In the glitzy realm of Palm Beach social events, there’s one gathering that stands out for its cheeky name and its profound impact on the community: The Old Bags Luncheon. Held annually at the iconic Breakers resort, this event brings together a blend of high fashion, philanthropy, and camaraderie for a cause close to the hearts of many. This year marked the 25th anniversary of this iconic event, known as the “Silver Jubilee.”
Picture this: a room adorned with the finest floral patterns and fascinators, filled with 600 women exuding elegance and enthusiasm. Although, what brings them together isn’t just their love for fashion; it’s their commitment to supporting the Center for Family Services of Palm Beach County.
The brainchild of a group inspired to raise funds for the center over two decades ago. The Old Bags Luncheon has evolved into one of the top five social events of the Palm Beach season. Its name, a nod to the auctioning of designer and vintage handbags, belies the significance of the cause it serves.
This year’s event was truly special, with Pila Pexton, a Charter Professional at Worth Avenue Yachts, serving as the VIP Ambassador, enriching the experience with her expertise. Collaborating closely with event chair Robin Gillen, Pila also coordinated the participation of Worth Avenue Yachts’ partner, Flexjet, adding an extra touch of luxury to the affair. “I was honored to be part of this year’s Old Bags Luncheon as a Worth Avenue Yachts VIP ambassador. Undeniably, it is one of Palm Beach’s top five social events,” said Pila.
The guest list boasted luminaries such as the incomparable Martha Stewart, who graced attendees with a VIP mimosa meet-and-greet session. Alongside Stewart were event chairs Robin Gillen, Tim Johnson, and the acclaimed outdoor living designer, Fernando Wong, whose creative genius has earned him accolades across publications like Elle Décor and Forbes.
As guests perused the stunning array of handbags up for auction—from Louis Vuitton to Jimmy Choo—each bid held the promise of making a difference in the lives of those supported by the Center for Family Services. The highlight of the auction was the “IT BAG,” a breathtaking creation by designer Silvia Furmanovich, fetching a remarkable $7,200.
Following the auction, guests were treated to a decadent three-course meal amidst the breathtaking ambiance of The Breakers. The Oceanfront Venetian room was transformed, with tables adorned in the freshest roses and a menu featuring culinary delights like chilled pea and cucumber soup with caviar toast and wild grilled salmon.
Among the distinguished attendees were Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger and Tommy Hilfiger. Their unwavering support underscores the importance of the center’s mission, especially in providing resources for children with special needs. Last year alone, the Old Bags Luncheon raised over $500,000, and this year’s event raised an impressive $850,000. A true testament to the community’s dedication to making a tangible difference in mental health services.
As the festivities concluded, it was evident that the Old Bags Luncheon isn’t merely an event; it’s a celebration of compassion, community, and couture. With tickets selling out in a single day, its popularity speaks volumes about the collective desire to contribute to a cause greater than oneself.
Thus, amidst the laughter, the bids, and the shared moments of connection, it’s the spirit of generosity that truly shines at the Old Bags Luncheon—a reminder that even in the world of high fashion there is even more room for philanthropy and goodwill.
