Explore the sugar-white beaches lined with bending palm trees, wander through the hidden rainforest waterfalls, and discover the glorious underwater landscapes bustling with wildlife in St. Thomas. The accessibility and amenities of St. Thomas makes it one of the most popular yachting destinations on the planet. The seemingly infinite islands surrounding Saint Thomas lie within a short distance of each other. With so many glamorous marinas just a short cruise away and a year-round schedule of exciting festivals, you’ll have trouble deciding what to do. We have curated a list of ‘must-see’ experiences and events to add to your charter itinerary.
Begin your journey in Charlotte Amalie, the capital city. Before making your way to one of the many marinas, ascent the 99 steps of Blackbeard’s Castle and revel in the breathtaking panoramic views and fascinating history dating back to the 1600’s. Peek in and out of the brick buildings that were once home to barrels of rum and spices bound for Europe. As you travel through the lively city, you’ll find many supermarkets and duty-free shopping centers, making it a breeze to find any provisions your heart desires.
Crown Bay Marina, a full-service marina, is only 10 minutes from the international airport and an excellent starting point for your expedition at sea. For larger vessels choose Yacht Haven Grande Marina and shopping complex. Recently restored, this conveniently located marina for yacht enthusiasts transformed the island into an upscale destination.
After enjoying the traditional boutiques and luxury shops adorning the cobblestone streets on the island, depart for a more remote destination. Cruise to Magen’s Bay located on the north shore, this cozy cove provides an excellent anchoring spot. Take the Wave Runners out for a spin or discover the joy of relaxing while sipping cocktails from your floating island oasis. With a wide array of inflatable and motorized toys at your fingertips you will have days of fun activities available and plenty of memories to be made on the water.
As the sun begins to set, watch the moon dance across the water at a jump-up or full moon party. Held regularly across the Virgin Islands, there is nothing quite like partying under a Caribbean moon. Listen to the steel band play while you smell the jerk chicken and conch fritters cooking. This utterly magical experience will be one you will cherish for years to come.
Make your way to Saint John and transport yourself to a completely different world. Only a short cruise away St. John, the smallest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands, is protected by the Virgin Islands National Park. The park spans over 5,000 acres and covers two-thirds of the island. Take time to enjoy the scores of scenic hiking trails, numerous scallops of secluded coves, and broad bands of astonishing beaches.
Caneel Bay is the preferred destination among locals for snorkeling and diving. The warm ocean waters are teeming with marine life. Observe the parrot fish, angel fish, and yellowtail snappers swim past you. Lose yourself in the underwater wreckage of sunken planes and boats. Feel like a real treasure hunter as you maneuver through the vibrant underwater landscapes.
The spectacular scenery of the U.S. Virgin Islands is excellent for any occasion and is a popular destination for weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays. Some of the other popular festivities and festivals on the island include Mardi Gras, Easter, and the Virgin Island Carnival. Watch Saint Croix erupt in a riot of color, music, and dancing in the streets when the Mardi Gras parade meanders through the island to lovely Cane Bay. Attend the annual carnival on St. Thomas where “Mocko Jumbies’ dressing up as spirits glide through the streets on giant stilts as steel bands play for all to hear.
Enjoy the enclave of natural beauty in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is the perfect mix of everything and nothing; perfect for those wanting to sample what the Caribbean has to offer, from its flash to its natural side.
