The Explorer Awards Ceremony took place on Thursday, March 21st at the Yacht Club de Monaco, graced by the esteemed presence of Monaco’s Prince Albert II and renowned explorers such as Mike Horn, Bertrand Piccard, Nina Lanza, Kathryn Sullivan, and Victor Vescovo. Notably, a significant group from the New York-based Explorers Club also participated in the festivities. Captain Sean Meagher, representing Worth Avenue Yachts, received the special ‘Coup de Cœur’ prize on behalf of the 47-meter motor yacht ‘LATTITUDE’. Captain Meagher accepted the award, stating, “When I first met Anil Thadani, the owner of LATTITUDE, I asked him, ‘Why are you buying this boat?’ He responded, ‘To go on adventures and photograph wildlife,’ and that’s exactly what we did. I am a proud member of the Monaco Yacht Club and the New York Explorers Club and honored to be on this stage.”
Since 2018, under Prince Albert II’s guidance, the YCM Explorer Awards have recognized yacht owners dedicated to marine protection. These awards celebrate individuals who integrate environmental care into their yacht’s design and usage. A professional jury presents four awards to individuals embodying the explorers of the future while upholding the Club’s foundational principle, the “Art de Vivre la Mer.” When asked about LATTITUDE, Captain Sean replied, “Anil Thadani, along with his family, friends, and our crew, are what made that boat special.”
One notable voyage was captured in the short film “The Highest Latitude,” documenting the 2016 expedition through Scandinavia to Svalbard, where the vessel became the first private vessel in history to circumnavigate the Svalbard archipelago and punch above 81deg N Latitude, only 500 miles shy of the North Pole. Other notable voyages include traversing the Northwest Passage in both directions in continuous years, then making the trek south to New Zealand, the South Pacific, and South East Asia.
According to Captain Sean, “Winning the YCM Explorer Award holds special significance for me as a member of the Captain’s Club at the Monaco Yacht Club. The recognition underscores the dedication to sustainability and innovation and further highlights the exceptional achievements of the LATTITUDE program”.
